The Healing Power of Germs?

Fears surrounding exposure to microbes are omnipresent, which is why it may come as a surprise to find research showing infection with certain "germs" confers significant health benefits.
We live in a day and age where germ theory has undergone a sort of apotheosis, assuming an almost Godlike power to affect and permeate every area of our lives with the fear of infection.

Not only are external institutions increasingly attaining the authority to force us to inject ourselves and children with preparations purported to defend us against germs, but even our inner thoughts are often infected uncontrollably with fears about exposure to them. Even the CDC has declared itself impotent against so-called "nightmare" bacteria, adding to the sense of powerlessness so many feel about their health destinies.

What makes this situation all the more surreal is the relatively recent discovery of the microbiome, namely, the 100 trillion viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, which outnumber our own cells 10-1, and which proves that we are more "germ" than "human," and in many respects, would not be alive without them: e.g. about 8% of our genome is retroviral in origin, 90% of our immune system depends on bacteria in our gut. How, then, can these microorganisms be as deadly as we are told, while at the same time be responsible for making possible our life itself?

The cognitive dissonance generated by these diverging, if not diametrically opposed paradigms -- "microbes as deadly" versus "microbes as essential to life" -- is enough to drive the non-fluoridated mind a bit crazy. But so much is riding on belief in one narrative over another. If germs are not as deadly as we are told, how would we justify the 60+ vaccines in the childhood vaccination schedule, and the 250+ in the developmental pipeline? Clearly, there are biopolitical and economic motivations pushing the germ-centric ideology forward, even in the face of an accumulating body of contrary evidence.

One such recent academic challenge to the germ theory can be found in a study published this year in Atherosclerosis titled, "Association of measles and mumps with cardiovascular disease: The Japan Collaborative Cohort (JACC) study," which found that exposure to common infections during childhood could decrease risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD).

How Zinc Deficiency Affects The Whole Body

Wellness Mama

http://wellnessmama.com/wp-content/uploads/How-zinc-Deficiency-affects-the-whole-body.jpg
I find it ironic that I had a zinc deficiency for years without realizing it… especially because I’d written a senior biology paper on the functions of zinc in human biology.
Like magnesium, I knew the many ways that zinc functions within the body, but I assumed I was obtaining enough from food. Many processed foods are fortified with zinc, and it also occurs naturally in foods such as oysters, beef, chicken, pumpkin seeds, lamb, spinach and yogurt.

The Role of Zinc In the Body

Zinc is a master-mineral of sorts (along with magnesium), and is needed for many reactions within the body. Unlike fat soluble vitamins, zinc is not stored for long periods of time in the body, so we need a constant supply of quality zinc from diet.
We don’t need large amounts of zinc each day, but it is absolutely vital that we get enough. Zinc is technically an essential trace element that is important for:
  • Proper immune function
  • Skin health and hair growth
  • Metabolism of food and absorption of other nutrients
  • Hormone balance
  • Gut health
  • Mental clarity
  • Wound healing
  • DNA synthesis
  • For eye health
  • Proper cell division (one of the reasons it is vital during pregnancy)
  • Even adequate taste and smell

The Lymphatic System: How to Make It Strong & Effective

Dr. Axe

Food is Medicine

Lymphatic system - Dr. Axe

What is the lymphatic system? It’s a critical part of the immune system, vital for protecting us from illness and damaging, disease-causing inflammation. Essentially, the lymphatic system is the the body’s inner “drainage system,” a network of blood vessels and lymph nodes that carry fluids from tissues around the body into the blood and vice versa.

The lymphatic system has the primary role of protecting the body against outside threats — such as infections, bacteria and cancer cells — while helping keep fluid levels in balance

The best way to protect the complex series of criss-crossing lymphatic vessels and “nodes” that span almost the entire body (every one except for the central nervous system) is to eat a healing diet, exercise and take steps to detoxify the body naturally.

Lymphatic vessels carry fluid that is managed through “valves,” which stop fluid from traveling the wrong way, similar to how blood flow works within the arteries and veins. In fact, the lymphatic system is very similar to the circulatory system made up of branches of veins, arteries and capillaries — both bring essential fluids around the whole body and are vital for keeping us alive.

11 Foods that Boost Your Immune System

The Active Times

Takeaway      Wikipedia.org
..................................................................................................
Foods that Boost Your Immune System

"Believe it or not, most immune support is based upon the health of the individual,” said Registered Dietitian for HelloFresh Rebecca Lewis. “If you eat an adequate healthy diet full of nutrient-dense foods, stay hydrated and exercise regularly—your ability to fight the common cold increases greatly. When you are feeling run down, it is always a good idea up your intake of fruits and vegetables to replace any critical vitamins and minerals you may be missing in your diet. It’s also important to manage your stress and get enough sleep to keep up your mental energy.”
While each of those tips are important for maintaining a strong immune system, it’s crucial to know which foods will help keep you cold- and flu-free this winter. We asked registered dietitians and nutritionists to name their top immune-boosting foods—these are their 11 picks.

Yogurt

“Probiotics, or ‘live active cultures,’ found in yogurt are healthy bacteria that help the gut,” said Stephanie Green, a registered dietitian nutritionist, chef and author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Optimum Nutrition, which will be released in January. “Choose a low-sugar or plain variety and look for a label that says, ‘Live and Active Cultures’.”

Mushrooms

Commercial cultivated Japanese edible mushroom species. Clockwise from left, enokitake, buna-shimeji, bunapi-shimeji, king oyster mushroom and shiitake.

“These famous fungi have been used for centuries in various medicinal remedies. Mushrooms help to increase the production of white blood cells, which help fight off infection,” Green said. “Choose shiitake, maitake and reishi varieties for the biggest dose of immunity. Dice and add to pasta sauce, sprinkle over a salad, or sauté with olive oil and add to your morning omelet.”

Oats

“These grains contain a type of fiber called beta-glucan, which contain antimicrobial properties,” Green said. “In addition to boosting immunity, oats can also speed wound healing and may help antibiotics work better.”

Sweet Potatoes

AlbertCahalan        -     Wikipedia.org
“Rich in an antioxidant called beta-carotene, sweet potatoes help to protect your skin, which is the body’s first line of defense against sickness,” Green said. “When beta-carotene is absorbed, the body turns it into Vitamin A whose major role acts as part of the production of connective tissue, a component of skin.”

In Defense of Homeopathy

In Defense of Homeopathy
Homeopathy is here to stay.  Despite relentless criticism from skeptics and fundamentalists, homeopathy has withstood the test of time.

"...and this little piggy cried, woo woo woo, all the way home."

Since its inception over 200 years ago, homeopathy has been the target of almost constant antipathy from the prevailing school of orthodox medicine. Given so much organized resistance from the mainstream, one would think that if homeopathy were much ado about nothing it would not have endured. It would have withered on the vine a long time ago. And yet it has persisted. No, it thrives—all across the globe—for a number of very good reasons.

When a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann discovered that a miniscule dose of a medicinal substance designed to mimic the symptom pattern of a sick person could paradoxically provoke a healing response in that same person, a medical revolution was set in motion. Dr. Hahnemann referred to this surprising phenomenon as the law of similars. As opposed to the conventional medical approach, which uses opposites to combat symptoms (antidepressants, anti-inflammatories, antihistamines, anticonvulsants, etc.), homeopathy represents a different approach to healing, one that uses "likes to cure likes."

The standard treatment for a bee sting or a case of poison ivy might involve the use of an antihistamine to suppress the inflammatory swelling, redness, and itching. A homeopathic practitioner, on the other hand, might recommend a highly diluted dose of a medicine made from the honeybee in the former case, and a similar dose of a medicine made from the poison ivy plant in the latter. It's a little bit like the use of anti-venoms to treat snakebites, only the doses used in homeopathy are much smaller.

Astragalus has been used over 2,000 years in the Traditional Chinese Medical System as one of the most potent tonic herbs.  Astragalus is a herbaceous perennial plant of the pea family mostly support immune system function and protect the liver and heart. Also can protect DNA and increase longevity. Contains bioflavonoids, choline and a polysaccharide, astragalan B, amongst other active ingredients. Astragalan B controls bacterial infection, viruses.

Halts Aging

Substances within astragalus root (called cycloastragenols and astragalosides) can slow the aging process by activating telomerase enzyme production. Within your DNA, there are small strands called telomeres that keep your cells from unraveling. Astragalus root extracts help extend the life of your telomeres, making you look younger and slowing down the aging process on a cellular level.

Decompose Cancer

Astragalus is Chinese herb which is used to treat liver cancer. This herb helps to restore the immune functions in cells. Take astragalus in the form of supplements of tea. You may prepare a mixture by boiling 4oz. of astragalus root in a quart of water. Drinking this mixture twice a day helps to reduce the size of tumor in liver.

Kidney Health

A regular kidney cleanse helps remove buildup, and herbs such as astragalus can help support health of the kidney itself. In some studies, researchers have discovered that astragalus offers protective effects against kidney disease. The more wastes removed, the younger and healthier the body.
The Astragalus herb protect and repair any existing DNA damage you may have. During the DNA replication process, telomeres keep the DNA together. Every time DNA replicates, the telomeres get slightly shorter and eventually when they get small enough, the process of cell death begins. Research has linked this process of cell death to aging and cancer.

Other Health Benefits of Astragalus Root

Helps with heart disease and high blood pressure 3/4
Reduces inflammation
Aids digestion
Improves liver function
Boosts the immune system
Treats burns and abscesses
Prevent common colds
Respiratory infections
Fibromyalgia Pain
Cure Anemia Prevent Kidney disease

The Luteolin in celery juice has also been shown in studies to be helpful in combating dementia. The reason for this is that it helps to reduce inflammation in the brain. These studies have suggested that eating celery or drinking celery juice can be a preventative measure and possibly a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

Electrolytes

Celery juice is great for athletes, because celery juice contains good electrolytes that are important to replace when you sweat.

Dissolves Calculus

Celery in vegetable form and celery seed are great urine-promoters and kidney tonics. Regular use of celery seed, as a spice or as a tea, may prevent kidney stone formation.

Insomnia

Minerals and aehthereal oils in celery juice have a tranquillizing effect on the nervous system, which is useful for people who suffer from insomnia. The high level of magnesium will help You to relax and sink into deep and calm sleep.

Natural Aphrodisiac

celery is the “sexiest” substance on Earth. It has a combination of Vitamin E, magnesium, niacin, potassium and zinc, which are all required for optimum sex. Celery also contains arginine, which is an amino acid that expands blood vessels the way Viagra is supposed to do.

Celery Juice Recipe

Ingredients:
3 stalks of celery
3 apples
1 stem broccoli (optional)
1/2 lemon (optional)
Directions:
-Wash the fruit and vegetables using water and a stiff vegetable     brush. Keep the leaves on the celery.
-Core the apples.
-Cut the peel off the lemon – some people like to leave this on but I find this makes the juice too bitter.
-Slice the fruit and vegetables to fit your juicer.

-Juice and enjoy.

Fetal Cells Permeate Blood Brain Barrier of Mother Lasting a Lifetime

OCTOBER 8, 2015 by APRIL McCARTHY

A mother may literally have her children on her mind at all times. Findings reveal that cells from fetuses migrate into the brains of their mothers, and can last a lifetime.http://assets.inhabitots.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/male-cells-found-in-brains-of-moms-537x378.jpg
Few would argue that the mother-baby bond during pregnancy is the strongest human connection possible. During pregnancy, a mother is so connected physically and psychologically to her child, that her baby depends on her for everything from nutrition, to blood flow to warmth and more. But baby also provides mother with some special.

Recent findings showed that during pregnancy, mothers and fetuses often exchange cells that can apparently survive in bodies for years, a phenomenon known as microchimerism. Scientists had found that in mice, fetal cells could even migrate into the brains of mothers. Now researchers have the first evidence fetal cells do so in humans as well.

Fetomaternal transfer probably occurs in all pregnancies and in humans the fetal cells can persist for decades or lifetime. Microchimeric fetal cells are found in various maternal tissues and organs including blood, bone marrow, skin and liver.

In mice, fetal cells have also been found in the brain. The fetal cells also appear to target sites of injury. Fetomaternal microchimerism may have important implications for the immune status of women, influencing autoimmunity and tolerance to transplants.

A fetal microchimeric cell from a pregnancy is recognized by the mother’s immune system partly as belonging to the mother, since the fetus is genetically half identical to the mother, but partly foreign, due to the father’s genetic contribution. This may “prime” the immune system to be alert for cells that are similar to the self, but with some genetic differences.

Cancer cells which arise due to genetic mutations are just such cells, and there are studies which suggest that microchimeric cells may stimulate the immune system to stem the growth of tumors. Many more microchimeric cells are found in the blood of healthy women compared to those with breast cancer, for example, suggesting that microchimeric cells can somehow prevent tumor formation.

In other circumstances, the immune system turns against the self, causing significant damage. Microchimerism is more common in patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis than in their healthy siblings, suggesting chimeric cells may have a detrimental role in this disease, perhaps by setting off an autoimmune attack.

Investigators analyzing the brains of 59 women who had died between the ages of 32 and 101, looked for signs of male DNA --which, they reasoned, would have come from the cells of sons. (They searched for male DNA because female DNA would have been harder to distinguish from a mother's genes.)

Nearly two-thirds of the women -- 37 of the 59 -- were found to have traces of the male Y chromosome in multiple regions of their brains. This effect was apparently long-lasting: The oldest female in whom male fetal DNA was detected was 94.
"In the fetus, we found that there is an immune system whose j
ob it is to teach the fetus to be tolerant of everything it sees, including its mother and its own organs," said Joseph M. McCune, MD, PhD, a professor in the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine. "After birth, a new immune system arises from a different stem cell that instead has the job of fighting everything foreign."

The defense system known as the blood-brain barrier keeps many drugs and germs in the bloodstream from entering the brain. However, doctors have found this barrier becomes more permeable during pregnancy, which could explain how these fetal cells migrated into the brains of their mothers.
"The most important implication of our findings is the potential for both positive and negative consequences of microchimerism in the brain for a number of different diseases that affect the brain, including degenerative diseases and cancer," researcher William Chan, an immunologistat the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle stated.

This is a burgeoning new field of inquiry with tremendous potential for novel findings as well as for practical applications. But it is also a reminder of our interconnectedness.

Lethal Viruses Contaminating the US Blood Supply?

Retroviruses hide out in the immune system, which means any immune activation could set off this ticking time-bomb and cause diseases like chronic fatigue syndrome among adults, and autism among children.  Are they lurking in the US blood supply?

PLAGUE – The Retrovirus-Gate Lies

As an attorney I learned (often the hard way), that if you wanted to know the truth about a person, you didn't just listen to their words, but you investigated their actions.  If a client said he wasn't a gambler, you should probably check out how many trips he's made to Las Vegas in the past year.  We all understand that, right?

So, why is it that with the XMRV retrovirus (more accurately referred to as the xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus, basically a mouse retrovirus that crossed-over into humans) that Dr. Mikovits and I wrote about in our book, PLAGUE: One Scientist's Intrepid Search for the Truth About Human Retroviruses, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Autism, and Other Diseases, officially declared by Dr. Ian Lipkin of Columbia University and the medical research community not to be a threat, are people spending a lot of money to protect against something just like XMRV?
One of the most important questions Dr. Mikovits investigated was whether the XMRV retrovirus posed a threat to the blood supply, just as the HIV retrovirus posed a threat to the blood supply decades earlier.  The investigation was troubled from the start and Dr. Mikovits was aware of immense pressure that the scientists reach the conclusion that no threat existed.

Shortly after the publication of her article in the journal Science in October of 2009, showing an association between the XMRV retrovirus and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), Dr. Mikovits was contacted by representatives from the Cerus Corporation.   They had developed the Cerus Intercept System, which involved inserting a molecule into the donated blood material, this molecule then attaches to the DNA or RNA of any potential pathogen, and then when exposed to ultraviolet light the molecule binds to the pathogen and prevents it from replicating.  ("The INTERCEPT Blood System Rids Blood Donations of All Pathogens," Scientific American, June 16, 2015)  Dr. Mikovits worked on two studies with Cerus, including one which showed the Oakland blood supply was contaminated with XMRV, and found that the Cerus system could inactivate all human retroviruses in blood products.

One Whiff of These 10 Scents Can Relieve Stress Almost Instantly

............................
SEPTEMBER 23, 2015 by APRIL McCARTHY
Ever wonder why some scents make you feel relaxed or energized? It’s no coincidence and we have our olfactory system to thank for its intimate relationship with the brain, which affects both our memory and mood. Here are 10 scents which will enhance this system with just one whiff.

1) Lemon
Promotes concentration and allows the mind to calm especially when angry, anxious or very exhausted. Lemon boosts the body's immune system, improving circulation and is known to reduce anxiety and depression.

2) Cinnamon
The stimulating properties in cinnamon can help fight mental fatigue and improve concentration and focus. Researchers from Wheeling Jesuit University studied participants and found that those who took a whiff of cinnamon improved in cognitive functions like visual-motor response, working memory and attention span.

3) Lavender
Lavender helps calm the mind and body almost instantly. But perhaps its most useful benefit is its ability to help treat insomnia. This essential oil has calming ands sedative properties that help control emotional stress. Lavender has a soothing effect on nerves and can relieve nervous tension and depression as well as treat headaches and migraines.

http://www.chefursula.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/lavender-19235_640.jpg

4) Rain
After a rainstorm, especially a rain storm that breaks a long dry spell, the world smells different. The clean scent after a rainfall is partially caused by ozone cleaning away some of the scents we take for granted. The smell of rain can literally relieve stress and improve your mood by over 60%

5) Fresh Cut Grass
Scent researchers found that a chemical released by a newly-mowed lawn can make people feel joyful and relaxed. The smell apparently is so powerful that neuroscientists came up with a perfume and air fragrance that matches it so the lawnless can also reap the benefits of the feel-good scent.

6) Peppermint

This season, win the fight against germs by supercharging your natural defenses with immunity boosting foods

Eat these immunity-boosting foods

By Nicole Catanese
Solvo Sundsbo
Most of us already know the basics when it comes to warding off a wintertime cold or flu—from excessive hand washing to loading up on vitamin C and getting plenty of rest, as well as keeping stress at bay. However, incorporating these foods and spices into your daily meal plan will play as much of an integral role in keeping you healthy, all season long.
Greek Yogurt
"Yogurt is packed with probiotics, which are live active cultures, or good bacteria, that help keep up your defences," says Candice Kumai, a Le Cordon Bleu–trained chef and author of the upcoming Clean Green Drinks, Cook Yourself Sexy and Pretty Delicious and a judge on Iron Chef America. Can't plan to eat yogurt every day? Try a probiotic supplement, too. "Probiotics are known to boost the immune system by supporting digestive function and gut health and helping to stave off, and fight flu symptoms—and taking a good-quality probiotic supplement, especially in the fall and winter months when our immune systems are in overdrive is so important, says Theri Griego Raby, MD, founder and medical director of the Raby Institute for Integrative Medicine in Chicago. Try Swisse Ultiboost Inner Balance, $20 for 30 capsules.
Fermented Foods
Add kombucha, sauerkraut, pickles, miso, tempeh and kimchi, to your grocery list. "Eating these foods every day is not only great for weight loss, and balancing pH levels, but also aiding in digestion and helping to destroy and inhibit the growth of bad bacteria," says Kumai.
Zinc
Think of oysters, roast beef, crab, lobster, dark chocolate, and peanuts as natural Zicam. "These can help to regulate immune responses, attack infected or cancerous cells and alleviate the common cold," says Kumai.
Garlic
"It's an extremely good natural immunity booster," says Kumai. "Garlic is full of selenium, manganese, vitamin B6 and anti-inflammatory agents that help to fight bacteria, protect your heart and of course is a good old remedy to fight the common cold," says Kumai.
Avocado
Need another reason to order guacamole? "They contain heart-healthy and monounsaturated fat—and this type of fat promotes the release of bile from the gallbladder, assisting in proper elimination of toxins from the body and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K," says Kumai. "As well as vitamin E, folate, panthotehenic acid, fiber, potassium." Translation: it's like an anti-cold multi-vitamin.

15 Plants and Herbs That Can Boost Lung Health, Heal Respiratory Infections And Even Repair Pulmonary Damage

A wave of viral and bacterial infections is sweeping across the Northern Hemisphere and people are taking longer to heal from an array of symptoms within the respiratory system. If you are resorting to conventional medicine to address these infections with antibiotics, you are not only adding to the problems associated with antibiotic resistance, but you’re also doing little to address the healing mechanisms within your body to address the cause. Herbal remedies not only boost lung health, but they can heal infections and even repair lung damage. Here are 15 of the best herbs to boost lung health.
15herbslungs-1

1. LICORICE ROOT
licorice-1
Licorice is one of the more widely consumed herbs in the world. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it occurs in more formulas than any other single herb because it is thought to harmonize the action of all other herbs. Licorice is very soothing and softens the mucous membranes of the throat and especially the lungs and stomach and at the same time cleanses any inflamed mucous membrane that needs immune system support. . It reduces the irritation in the throat and yet has an expectorant action. It is the saponins (detergent-like action) that loosen the phlegm in the respiratory tract, so that the body can expel the mucus. Compounds within this root help relieve bronchial spasms and block the free radical cells that produce the inflammation and tightening of the air ways. The compounds also have antibacterial and antiviral effects to them as well which helps fight off viral and bacterial strains in the body that can cause lung infections. Glycrrhizins and flavonoids can even help prevent lung cancer cells from forming which means they can even prevent lung cancer.

2. COLTSFOOT
coltsfoot-2
Coltsfoot has been traditionally by Native Americans for thousands of years to strengthen the lungs. It clears out excess mucus from the lungs and bronchial tubes. It soothes the mucus membranes in the lungs, and has been shown in research to assist with asthma, coughs, bronchitis, and other lung ailments. Coltsfoot is available in dried form for tea or as an alcohol extract known as a tincture.

3. CANNABIS
cannabis-3
The toxic breakdown of therapeutic compounds in cannabis from burning the plant are totally avoided with vaporization. Extraction and inhaling cannabinoid essential oils of the unprocessed plant affords significant mitigation of irritation to the oral cavity that comes from smoking.Cannabis is perhaps one of the most effective anti-cancer plants in the world shown in study after study to stimulate cannabinoid receptor activation in specific genes and mediate the anti-invasive effect of cannabinoids. Vaporizing cannabis allows the active ingredients to stimulate the body’s natural immune response and significantly reduces the ability of infections to spread. Vaporizing cannabis (especially with very high amounts of cannabinoids) opens up airways and sinuses, acting as a bronchodilator. It is even a proven method to treat and reverse asthma.

4. OSHA ROOT

osha-4
Osha is an herb native to the Rocky Mountain area and has historically been used by the Native Americans for respiratory support. The roots of the plant contain camphor and other compounds which make it one of the best lung-support herbs in America. One of the main benefits of osha root is that it helps increase circulation to the lungs, which makes it easier to take deep breaths. Also, when seasonal sensitivities flare up your sinuses, osha root which is not an actual antihistamine, does produce a similar effect and may be help calm respiratory irritation.

5. THYME
thyme-5
Thyme is very powerful in the fight against chest congestion. It produces powerful antiseptic essential oils which are classified as naturally antibiotic and anti-fungal. Thyme is a well known to zap acne than expensive prescription creams, gels and lotions. Thyme tea has the power to chase away and eliminate bacteria and viruses so whether your infection is based on either, it will work. Thyme has been used as a lung remedy consumed since antiquity and is used extensively to day to prevent and treat respiratory tract infections and bacterial infection pneumonia.

6. OREGANO

oregano-6
Although oregano contains the vitamins and nutrients required by the immune system, its primary benefits are owed to its carvacrol and rosmarinic acid content. Both compounds are natural decongestants and histamine reducers that have direct, positive benefits on the respiratory tract and nasal passage airflow. Oil of oregano fights off the dangerous bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, better than the most common antibiotic treatments. Oregano has so many health benefits that a bottle of organic oregano oil should be in everyone’s medicine cabinet.

7. LOBELIA

lobelia-7
Did you know that horses given lobelia are able to breath more deeply? Its benefits are not limited to equestrians. It has been used as “asthmador” in Appalachian folk medicine. Lobelia, by some accounts, is thought to be one of the most valuable herbal remedies in existence. Extracts of Lobelia inflata contain lobeline, which showed positive effects in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tumor cells. Lobelia contains an alkaloid known as lobeline, which thins mucus, breaks up congestion. Additionally, lobelia stimulates the adrenal glands to release epinephrine, in effect, this relaxes the airways and allows for easier breathing. Also, because lobelia helps to relax smooth muscles, it is included in many cough and cold remedies. Lobelia should be part of everyone’s respiratory support protocol!

8. ELECAMPANE
elecamp-8
Elecampane has been used by Native Americans for many years to clear out excess mucus that impairs lung function. It is known as a natural antibacterial agent for the lungs, helping to lessen infection particularly for people who are prone to lung infections like bronchitis. Herbal practitioners often recommend one teaspoon of the herb per cup of boiling water, drunk three times daily for two to three weeks but elecampane is also available in tincture format for ease.

9. EUCALYPTUS

eucalyp-9
Native to Australia, eucalyptus isn’t just for Koala bears! Aborigines, Germans, and Americans have all used the refreshing aroma of eucalyptus to promote respiratory health and soothe throat irritation. Eucalyptus is a common ingredient in cough lozenges and syrups and its effectiveness is due to a compound called cineole. Cineole has numerous benefits — it’s an expectorant, can ease a cough, fights congestion, and soothes irritated sinus passages. As an added bonus, because eucalyptus contains antioxidants, it supports the immune system during a cold or other illness.

10. MULLEIN

mullein-10
Both the flowers and the leaves of the mullein plant are used to make an herbal extract that helps strengthen the lungs. Mullein is used by herbal practitioners to clear excess mucus from the lungs, cleanse the bronchial tubes, and reduce inflammation that is present in the respiratory tract. A tea can be made from one teaspoon of the dried herb to one cup of boiled water. Alternatively, you can take a tincture form of this herb.

11. LUNGWORT

luingwort-11
Lungwort is a tree-growing lichen that actually resembles lung tissue in appearance. However, this natural remedy doesn’t just look the part. As early as the 1600s, lungwort has been used to promote lung and respiratory health and clear congestion. Pulmonaria selections come in all kinds so seek an herbologist for direction. Lungwort also contains compounds that are powerfully effective against harmful organisms that affect respiratory health.

12. CHAPARRAL

chapparal-12
Chaparral, a plant native to the southwest, has been appreciated by the Native Americans for lung detoxification and respiratory support. Chaparral contains powerful antioxidants that resist irritation and NDGA which is known to fight histamine response. NDGA inhibits aerobic and anaerobic glycolysis (the energy-producing ability) of cancer cells. Chaparral is also an herb that fights harmful organisms. The benefits of chaparral are most available in a tincture extraction but chaparral tea may support respiratory problems by encouraging an expectorant action to clear airways of mucus.

13. SAGE
sage-13
Sage’s textured leaves give off a heady aroma, which arises from sage’s essential oils. These oils are the source of the many benefits of sage tea for lung problems and common respiratory ailments. Sage tea is a traditional treatment for sore throats and coughs. The rich aromatic properties arising from sage’s volatile oils of thujone, camphor, terpene and salvene can be put to use by inhaling sage tea’s vapors to dispel lung disorders and sinusitis. Alternatively, brew a strong pot of sage tea and place it into a bowl or a vaporizer.

14. PEPPERMINT

peppermint-14
Peppermint, and peppermint oil, contains menthol — a soothing ingredient known to relax the smooth muscles of the respiratory tract and promote free breathing. Dried peppermint typically contains menthol, menthone, menthyl acetate, menthofuran and cineol. Peppermint oil also contains small amounts of many additional compounds including limonene, pulegone, caryophyllene and pinene. Paired with the antihistamine effect of peppermint, menthol is a fantastic decongestant. Many people use therapeutic chest balms and other inhalants that contain menthol to help break up congestion. Additionally, peppermint is an antioxidant and fights harmful organisms.

15. PLANTAIN LEAF

plaintain-15
With fruit that is similar in appearance to a banana, plantain leaf has been used for hundreds of years to ease cough and soothe irritated mucous membranes. Many of its active constituents show antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, as well as being anti-inflammatory and antitoxic. Clinical trials have found it favorable against cough, cold, and lung irritation. Plantain leaf has an added bonus in that it may help relieve a dry cough by spawning mucus production in the lungs.
Seek the advice of an herbologist or Naturopathic Doctor on the preparation, appropriate dosages and frequency according to your condition. Many of the herbs above may also be combined for cumulative effects. All of the above are available in various forms, as nutritional supplements, tea blends and prepared oils. You can always grow your own as well to ensure your herbs are organic and ethically harvested.

About Me

My photo
desertrose
I am a woman who has come back from the depths of the Abyss. Having to rediscover myself and who I truly am. My Journey has been a long and hard one. Who I thought I was has been stripped from me. Not by man, not by God but rather a fated day lost to the Abyss. The nothingness that returned me to this reality not knowing who I am. Not connected to that person I had sought so hard to become and stay faithful to.. I am having to learn to be human all over again. To establish a connection to the everyday that has been lost to me. So now my quest rather than enlightenment of a knowledge and existence I already possess is more the search for the connection to this life and existence in the here and now. My memories of myself, who I was, what I believed are now all "Echos From The Abyss" which has transformed me into whatever I am today and will grow to be tomorrow. A journey of self discovery and true self awareness.
